4 Design Frameworks Not To Miss

posted by Pete Prestipino @ 9:12 AM
Thursday, January 3, 2013

Ever since Website Magazine profiled several popular CSS and website frameworks back in late November 2012, there’s been demand from our readers for additional resources to explore. And what do you know, we managed to identify a few others!

Just like the frameworks previously mentioned, the resources listed below are definitely worthy of attention from anyone interested in developing a website quickly, easily and with as many best practices built in from the start.

Bootstrap: A now very popular framework and the inspiration for others including Workless (see below), Boostrap was built by Twitter developers and features a 12-column responsive grid, numerous components, Javascript plugins, form controls and even a Web-based tool to customize the appearance.

Workless: An HTML5/CSS3 framework which standardizes CSS, offers straightforward scaffolding, prioritizes usability and interaction, sets base typography, and adds helper classes to style elements easily.

Less Framework: A popular CSS grid system for designing adaptive websites, Less Framework contains 4 layouts and 33 sets of typography presets, all based on a single grid. If you like this one, you’ll also like its successor Frameless (http://framelessgrid.com/), a new fixed-width adaptive grid.

Skeleton: Less a UI framework than a development kit, Skeleton is a collection of CSS files for rapid site development. Skeleton uses a 960 grid base that while providing some basic styles is ideal for those wanting to implement their own design features.

Safely Deploy HTML5-Based Mobile Apps in the Cloud

posted by Michael Garrity @ 1:17 PM
Tuesday, September 18, 2012

appMobi, a provider of cloud-based HTML5 mobile development and deployment tools and services, has officially announced a licensable enterprise version of it’s mobile app development and cloud services stack.

The new service, privateStack, was built to aid businesses, government agencies and other organizations in completing mobile application deployments with end-to-end control for enhanced security and more. Many of appMobi’s enterprise customers had expressed interest in creating hybrid, Web-based mobile apps for different audiences, including sales teams, services technicians, executives, operations personnel and customers.

Hybrid apps tend to appeal to enterprises because of how much they simplify app creation and deployment using HTML5, as opposed to the more arcane languages (e.g. Objective C) used by native app developers. However, these requests were often hampered by concerns about data security, service quality and the general difficulty of distributing corporate apps in public app stores. Thus, appMobi came up with privateStack to address these problems. It will provide enterprise CTOs with the ability to support native-quality, cross-platform, HTML5-based mobile apps with total control over hosting geography, security, user authentication and gateways into corporate data silos.

privateStack comes with all of appMobi’s HTML5 development tools for hybrid development with both appMobi and PhoneGap, as well as all of the features from appMobi’s cloud services platform, including authentication, rich media push messaging, mobile app analytics, remote app updates, in-app purchasing, gamification and social network interfaces.

All privateStack applications can be built into iOS and Android store-ready apps or deployed on secure corporate intranets. The service is offered by appMobi as an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) for top-tier update and rapid, seamless scalability. It’s also offered in both managed and custom configurations.

Customers interested in hosting privateStack on their personal corporate data centers can do so thanks to the availability of enterprise source licensing.

HTML5 Sites Take Over the Web

posted by Allison Howen @ 9:00 AM
Monday, July 30, 2012

More than 1 million HTML5 websites have been added to the ’Net thanks to DIY Web publishing platform Wix.com.

This number is huge, especially considering that Wix launched its HTML5 website builder in late March 2012. The platform includes 170 website templates that cater to a variety of industries and doesn’t require users to have knowledge of coding skills in order to leverage the platform.

"Until now, HTML5 was a buzzword to describe the 'future' of the web. With Wix' 1 millionth HTML5 site built this month, it's clear that individuals and small businesses have decided it is the present and where the web is destined," says Avishai Abrahami, CEO of Wix.com. "No longer in the dark or stuck with having to outsource, the Wix HTML5 platform answers a wide market need. We provide our users with the hammer and tools to build their online real estate, and we're working 24/7 to deliver an HTML5 website builder with unmatched features flexibility and customization."

According to analytics from websites that have been created through the Wix platform, 92 percent of Wix users prefer to customize website templates rather than create a site from scratch. However, stats show that U.S. and Brazilian users are the ones who are customizing the templates to fit their specific needs the most – by adding design features, optimizing their SEO settings, embedding external add-ons and social elements to create content-rich websites.

The Wix HTML5 editor is still in beta, and has already seen a series of feature improvements, with other major product announcements expected in the coming weeks.

HTML5 Splits – Snapshot or Living Standard?

posted by Peter A. Prestipino @ 2:45 PM
Tuesday, July 24, 2012

A rather important development in the world of HTML5 has taken place. The two groups responsible for the development of HTML (the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group or WHATWG and the World Wide Web Consortium or W3C) have decided to have two versions of HTML5 – the snapshot and the living standard – making the decision on which is best to use a rather confusing one to say the least.

Since 2004, the WHATWG has been responsible for the advancement of HTML5 but there seems to be some strife among it and the W3C. In a recent post to the WHATWG list, the editor of its HTML5 specification writes:

More recently, the goals of the W3C and the WHATWG on the HTML front have diverged a bit as well. The WHATWG effort is focused on developing the canonical description of HTML and related technologies, meaning fixing bugs as we find them adding new features as they become necessary and viable, and generally tracking implementations. The W3C effort, meanwhile, is now focused on creating a snapshot developed according to the venerable W3C process. This led to the chairs of the W3C HTML working group and myself deciding to split the work into two, with a different person responsible for editing the W3C HTML5, canvas, and microdata specifications than is editing the WHATWG specification.

Does that mean that there will be two HTML5 standards? The likely answer, at least in the short term, is yes. The W3C is apparently planning to create a single, definitive standard (the snapshot) while the WHATWG’s living standard will continue to add new features and receive refinements.

What this means for Web professionals (designers and developers) in particular is that they will, at least for the time being, be forced to choose between the snapshot or the living standard. If you want to play it safe, use the W3C’s snapshot. If you want to test the limits, use the WHATWG’s living standard.

Why Did Web Builder Wix Drop IE8 Support?

posted by Peter A. Prestipino @ 3:30 PM
Wednesday, May 9, 2012

In what I consider a rather bold move, HTML5 Web publishing platform Wix announced that it will no longer support Internet Explorer 8, citing a general lack of support for its emerging HTML5 product.

While IE commands approximately 20-percent share of the browser market globally (according to StatCounter), Wix analyzed its 20 million-strong userbase and found that only 12 percent were using IE8. Couple that metric with IE8's widely known inability to handle HTML5's interactive elements, and the decision was likely not a difficult one to make for Wix.

But how do Wix clients feel about the decision?

Apparently, 89 percent of Wix users support the addition of HTML5 features to the website builder over the continued support of IE8. Enough said.

"By freeing the Wix platform from the constraints IE8 places on its users, Wix will continue to lead the advancement of HTML5 Web design features that aren't supported by outdated browsers today," says Avishai Abrahami, Wix CEO and Co-founder. "The Wix user demands more variety and a consistent stream of new features which will benefit their website in the long run. Advanced HTML5 Web design and IE8 support cannot co-exist."

GM to launch OnStar API for apps that can control cars

posted by Technology @ 11:15 AM
Friday, January 13, 2012

General Motors, Ford, Mercedes, Subaru and even QNX (owned by Research In Motion) each showed off their respectively differing approaches to getting apps into the dashboards of our cars at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.

And while the idea of apps in the car is a dream for some, so far, most of the apps center around replicating smartphone or tablet experiences from the driver's seat.

OnStar RemoteLink app for iOS

OnStar, the GM-owned telematics company, has a slightly different idea to piggyback off the work developers are doing building apps for use in both smartphones and cars.

OnStar wants developers to create apps that use its wireless service to actually control cars in new ways that utilize what it already can do — automatic crash response, stolen vehicle tracking, turn-by-turn navigation and roadside assistance for subscribers of its wireless in-car assistance service.

This isn't Google's self-driving car but rather OnStar is hoping developers will follow what it started when it launched its OnStar RemoteLink app for Apple iPhones and iPads last year.

OnStar RemoteLink enables users (who also own select 2010 or newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick or GMC vehicles) to view real-time data such as mileage, fuel in the gas tank, oil life and tire pressure from their car or truck. The app also allows users to remotely unlock doors, honk horns, shine lights, start the engine and, of course, contact a dealer.

It's these sorts of capabilities that OnStar is now offering developers through its API, and the first developer to build on that is RelayRides, a neighbor to car-sharing service. A new RelayRides app, which we got a preview of at CES (as seen int he video above), will launch later this year on Apple's iOS and allow car owners to unlock their cars remotely after the person renting their vehicle arrives, or even track where a renter has taken their car.

OnStar's API isn't yet available to all developers; company officials said that would take place in the first half of this year, but what RelayRides is working on shows a bit of its potential. GM said at CES that any developers interested in using the OnStar API should email the company at developers@onstar.com.

RelayRides says its new OnStar integrated app, in both an iOS and Android-friendly HTML5 form, will launch "early this year."

Introduction to Edge – Adobe Now Secure from Oblivion?

posted by Edward Korcheg @ 11:07 PM
Thursday, December 8, 2011

Adobe has made another huge step forward towards the great and powerful HTML5 technology by releasing the public preview of Adobe Edge tool (which by the way you can already download from Adobe labs). As it has been said, Adobe offers a preview of this new software so you could take part in the process of debugging and improving Edge by sending the Edge team your feedback concerning the brand new product. The real fun part is that this is basically the last hope of Adobe in terms of not losing the web animation battle. That’s why it matters so much to all of us.

Adobe Edge is the web motion and designing tool that creates animated content with the help of open source standards such as HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript programming language. It is obvious that with the release of Edge Adobe moves towards the mobile devices which are currently the sweetest piece of the web market pie. It seemes that Adobe decided to remind us all thar they are not only famous for Flash, but if you think that Edge is going to replace Flash I guess it is not quite right. Well, at least it won’t happen in the nearest future. It is just an additional software for mobile developers that may be a part of a powerful tandem with other tools. Also don’t forget about Wallaby project – Flash to HTML5 converter from Adobe, it still remains one of Adobe’s priority directions and can be considered a software complimentary to Edge and Flash.

Introduction to Edge Adobe Now Secure from Oblivion?

Major features

  • User interface attracts with excellent easy timeline panel and additional toolbars. Of course those web developers who worked with Flash editor or After Effects will find many adoptions in the Edge’s interface but with easier usability level.
  • File import feature allows you to import SVG, PNG, GIF, and JPG web graphic files. SVG is not fully supported at the preview version and Edge developers promise more “SVG freedom” in the future.
  • Compatibility is the issue that is the most important to the majority of mobile developers. Adobe Edge is compatible with all major mobile web browsers that have HTML5 support (including iOS, Android, HP webOS and Blackberry mobile browsers) and all desktop broswers with HTML5 support.
  • The output standards are very promising for web developers because Edge not only reads but also writes HTML, CSS and JavaScript files. Edge uses JSON (stands for JavaScript Object Notation) data structure to store animated content which gives flexibility and reliability in working with animated files.
  • Adding animations wouldn’t deeply affect the HTML file because Edge’s technology creates a separate Javasript file so Adobe Edge clearly differentiates between the original HTML and the code that you’ve compelled for animation.

SVG, Canvas and Other Goodies

As you may have noticed, Adobe Edge is so far in the preview mode and there are many important milestones ahead. So, now Adobe’s developers are working on improvement of the SVG support (not only file import option). Also we are waiting for a canvas implementation because so far all animations are based on div and CSS. According to the Adobe’s developers, canvas shows poor performance in major mobile browsers but it will be implemented in the final release for sure. So things look pretty promising.

Well, Edge is in the early beta right now, but even in this status it is a very promising editor with a huge potential. In case you’re interested (and in our opinion this is definitely worth being interested in) you should definitely try this new product from Adobe – chances are it is the future of mobile web development.

What do you think about Adobe Edge? Did you try the beta yet? Do you believe it will become the replacement of Flash editor? Will it save Adobe from the oblivion on mobile segment? Please be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

BrightCove App Cloud Available

Wouldn't it be nice if you could develop that next killer app in the cloud? Well you can! Cloud content service Brightcove has made App Cloud, an end-to-end platform for the development, deployment and operation of native apps for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, available to the general public.

App Cloud combines an open HTML5 Web development model with "intelligent" cloud services to accelerate app development, optimize performance, measure effectiveness, and enable dynamic updates to installed apps. Developers use HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and the App Cloud software development kit (SDK) to create apps.

“The App Cloud beta program has been very well received over the past few months, and we have been impressed by the quality, breadth and creativity of the apps developed by our beta users,” said Ashley Streb, Vice President of Technology at Brightcove. “Now, any organization can take advantage of App Cloud to easily build, deliver, and manage dynamic, custom content apps across multiple devices for a superior end user experience.”

Brightcove indicated that more than 1,200 individual users have participated in the App Cloud beta testing program and several App Cloud-powered apps are currently available for download through the iTunes App Store and Google's Android Market including apps from the U.S. Department of State and Lifetime Networks.

HTML5 Web Storage – Introduction

HTML5 Web Storage Introduction “HTTP cookie (also known as a web cookie, or browser cookie) is used for an origin website to send state information to a user’s browser and for the browser to return the state information to the origin site.” (Source: Wikipedia)

Nowadays regular web browsing is hard to imagine without the enabled cookies function. All popular websites use cookies for various identifying procedures and functions. Of course you’ve seen those messages where a website administration is asking you to enable cookies in your web browser for comfortable using their website (in some cases working with certain websites is impossible or at least pointless without having cookies enabled). Cookies have several significant drawbacks, among which are the following ones:

  • security – due to the whole idea of storing data, cookies are stored on the user’s hard drive as the plain text and there is a big chance that cookies files could be hacked;
  • performance – every HTTP request/response between server / browser decreases website’s performance speed;
  • size limit – usually cookies are limited to 4096 bytes in size and 300 maximum cookie count per one domain;

HTML5 Web Storage Instead of Cookies

HTML5 Web Storage Introduction

Considering the drawbacks that we’ve mentioned above it is obvious that web developers have started seeking for a new and efficient solution. Currently this solution is HTML5 web storage, and judging from the popularity of HMTL5 as a technology and HTML5 templates as design solutions for the new web, we definitely can tell that HTML5 web storage has a great future. This new technology or storage has two key features that will make you forget about cookies:

  • huge amount of space: now you can store much more useful information on the user’s hard drive including some localization data, temporary storage etc.
  • simple API: developers can easily set up key/value pairs on the fly.

According to the W3C specification draft, there are two types of web storage and these are local storage and session storage. HTML5 web storage reduces a huge number of server requests and now personal data will be used only when it is being asked for, instead of being requested with every request to the server as it was with the cookies. It means that you can store large amounts of data without affecting the website’s performance. HTML5 along with Javascript allow to use more of user’s resources without involving server-side programming and databases. Now let’s go deeper with these two types.

Local storage uses technogoly similar to Silverlight isolated storage when all data is stored on the client’s side. Also local storage has no time limit – basically you can access your personal data anytime you want. Local storage is positioned as a cost-effective alternative to HTTP cookies.

Session storage is used to store the data of one session and it will be deleted when the user closes the browser window. As you may have guessed, the session storage is great for storing data for the websites which are open in one browser window while local storage can span across multiple browser windows.

Web Storage is supported by such browsers as IE8, Firefox 3.5, Safari 4, Google Chrome 4, Opera 10.50 and all of their newer versions. So, if you want to start using web storage API please consider the list of browsers supported.

The usage of HTML5 Web Storage

This technology is great for web developers that create various web applications. Local storage allows you to run applications offline, use data during multiple browsers sessions, save info about the products added to the shopping cart and so on. Before you’ll start using web storage objects you must keep in the mind that web storage as well as cookies can be turned off by the user.

Another important detail which concerns the web storage is the ability to store only strings which is a huge drawback so far. Also don’t forget about the security issues that might appear while using web storage. Use only secure connections to share improtant information between client’s machine and server. That is all for now, good luck and hope to see you soon.
