Last week we have announced the release of our WordPress 3.x themes. One of the major features they include is the ability for website owners to create and edit custom post types and page templates. This was actually one of trump cards that fortified WordPress’ positions in the CMS comparison chart. WordPress was often criticized for weak content system and the lack of flexibility in general (as we know WordPress is considered to be a blogging platform which is why it was pretty complicated to customize it for classical static business websites). So now this problem is fixed, and our new WordPress themes are perfectly compatible with this new feature and include some predefined custom post types and page templates.
So let’s get back now to these features. First of all, it very important to understand the meaning of the following terms: posts, pages, custom posts types and page templates. Without it it would be hard to comprehend all advantages and even the main point of implementing these new features.
- Post is a default content type which is related to the blogging sphere. Usually blog posts are displayed in reverse sequential order by time (newest posts come first).
- Page is a default content type that used for the static pages. Pages are for non-blog content. For example the default set of WordPress pages contains Home Page, About Us and maybe Contact Us pages. Actually you can remove all posts from a WordPress installation and by this you’ll achieve a standard non-blog static website.
- Page Template is a functional feature of our WordPress 3.x themes which allows you to change the page layout, number of columns, move siderbar etc.
- Custom Post Type is another functional feature that is tightly connected with Page templates. This option allows you to manage website’s content which is not typical for blogging post types. For example with the help of Posts section at the dashboard you can create separate pages for portfolio page items, edit content of the slider on your pages and so on. Custom post types can be the elements that page templates contain (e.g. every individual testimonial in a testimonials page template is built with testimonials post type) or may be used independently.
Now we will show you some interesting examples of the custom post types and page templates in our new WordPress 3.x themes. By the way if you want to see them in action – just click the live demo of the WordPress theme and play with its features ad lib. Here are some examples of page templates and custom post types.

Good news, our dear Joomloids! The latest version of Joomla CMS has been demonstrated to the world (even though in beta so far) and now we can savour all its new features and improvements. We all know that Joomla has one of the greatest communities in the world and many of the new features were implemented due to the work of devoted community members. Soon you’ll be able to download the stable version of Joomla 2.5 by yourself – official Joomla blog informs that the Joomla 2.5.0 GA (general availability) is due to be released on 24 January 2012. Also there is a solution for the lazy Joomla fans that have no time or just don’t want to do that manually – there is an one-click upgrade message that you will be able to find in the administrator page.
Below you’ll find a list of the most significant features of Joomla 2.5 release. Some of these will melt web developers’ hearts because there is nothing more charming than finding out that Joomla has released the support for other types of databases or some useful core improvements. Finally! Yes, you’ve read it right – from now on Joomla supports not only MySQL database but also MS SQL, PostgreSQL. Finder makes pre-search through your content, adds auto-completion and stemming into your search. Search results are provided by analyzing the content and frequency of search terms. New Joomla search suggests alternative words or phrases (similar to Google search). This new search is much faster and allows installing special adapters that enhance search by supporting standard Joomla content and various types of documents.
CAPTCHA power!
Joomla 2.5 is armed with CAPTCHA plugin that has been built into the core. It means that all your website forms are protected with CAPTCHA. Basically this feature is mostly used for registration of the new users but you can enable it for other extensions that need it. Usually CAPTCHA has been available in non-core extensions, but this time this feature is enabled in core.
Additional New Features for Admins
- Images and Links menu – this is a feature that would be useful for content creators and web site admins because it allows you to set up simple standardized layout for blogs, news reports, etc. This feature will help you to customize the back end article editor to limit content creator and content editor options.
- Custom Text Filters – the filtering system has been improved and you can create your own blacklists (which are much easier to manage due to the fact that they contain only the forbidden tags and attributes). Also you can choose your own options for filtering process.
- New Menus are linked with a Modules – considering some peculiarities that Joomla users have faced in version 1.7 and 1.6 where menus did not automatically create a module, developers decided to make a very important improvement. In Joomla 2.5 there is a link that creates a new module in case if your menu doesn’t have any.
- Manager for Language Overrides – you are able to make text changes in a label, tooltip or email notifications by using new language manager. Now you may not disturb your developers with some small tasks like “Please change the Company’s name in the email that goes out with the standard password recovery email”.
- Flexible Newsfeed Order – now you can choose the order of the feed items. There are two options available that you can choose to display either the most recent first or the oldest first.
- SEO: languagecode is another great feature for SEO experts using Joomla. It shows the search engine “spiders” the language and country code they expect even if the Joomla language pack has a different one.

Introduction to Edge – Adobe Now Secure from Oblivion?

Adobe has made another huge step forward towards the great and powerful HTML5 technology by releasing the public preview of Adobe Edge tool (which by the way you can already download from Adobe labs). As it has been said, Adobe offers a preview of this new software so you could take part in the process of debugging and improving Edge by sending the Edge team your feedback concerning the brand new product. The real fun part is that this is basically the last hope of Adobe in terms of not losing the web animation battle. That’s why it matters so much to all of us.
Adobe Edge is the web motion and designing tool that creates animated content with the help of open source standards such as HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript programming language. It is obvious that with the release of Edge Adobe moves towards the mobile devices which are currently the sweetest piece of the web market pie. It seemes that Adobe decided to remind us all thar they are not only famous for Flash, but if you think that Edge is going to replace Flash I guess it is not quite right. Well, at least it won’t happen in the nearest future. It is just an additional software for mobile developers that may be a part of a powerful tandem with other tools. Also don’t forget about Wallaby project – Flash to HTML5 converter from Adobe, it still remains one of Adobe’s priority directions and can be considered a software complimentary to Edge and Flash.
Major features
- User interface attracts with excellent easy timeline panel and additional toolbars. Of course those web developers who worked with Flash editor or After Effects will find many adoptions in the Edge’s interface but with easier usability level.
- File import feature allows you to import SVG, PNG, GIF, and JPG web graphic files. SVG is not fully supported at the preview version and Edge developers promise more “SVG freedom” in the future.
- Compatibility is the issue that is the most important to the majority of mobile developers. Adobe Edge is compatible with all major mobile web browsers that have HTML5 support (including iOS, Android, HP webOS and Blackberry mobile browsers) and all desktop broswers with HTML5 support.
- The output standards are very promising for web developers because Edge not only reads but also writes HTML, CSS and JavaScript files. Edge uses JSON (stands for JavaScript Object Notation) data structure to store animated content which gives flexibility and reliability in working with animated files.
- Adding animations wouldn’t deeply affect the HTML file because Edge’s technology creates a separate Javasript file so Adobe Edge clearly differentiates between the original HTML and the code that you’ve compelled for animation.
SVG, Canvas and Other Goodies
As you may have noticed, Adobe Edge is so far in the preview mode and there are many important milestones ahead. So, now Adobe’s developers are working on improvement of the SVG support (not only file import option). Also we are waiting for a canvas implementation because so far all animations are based on div and CSS. According to the Adobe’s developers, canvas shows poor performance in major mobile browsers but it will be implemented in the final release for sure. So things look pretty promising.
Well, Edge is in the early beta right now, but even in this status it is a very promising editor with a huge potential. Some meaning can be perceived without even seeing it distinctly. And to understand how it works, we are to look at the surrounding world differently.
According to Friedman, the substance is of utmost importance and consists of virtue, idea, utility, measurement, language and ambition. On the whole, it all comprises some character with an authentic voice, original and client-oriented idea as well as a tendency for improvement. Nowadays regular web browsing is hard to imagine without the enabled cookies function. All popular websites use cookies for various identifying procedures and functions. Of course you’ve seen those messages where a website administration is asking you to enable cookies in your web browser for comfortable using their website (in some cases working with certain websites is impossible or at least pointless without having cookies enabled). Cookies have several significant drawbacks, among which are the following ones:
- security – due to the whole idea of storing data, cookies are stored on the user’s hard drive as the plain text and there is a big chance that cookies files could be hacked;
- performance – every HTTP request/response between server / browser decreases website’s performance speed;
- size limit – usually cookies are limited to 4096 bytes in size and 300 maximum cookie count per one domain;
HTML5 Web Storage Instead of Cookies
Considering the drawbacks that we’ve mentioned above it is obvious that web developers have started seeking for a new and efficient solution. Currently this solution is HTML5 web storage, and judging from the popularity of HMTL5 as a technology and HTML5 templates as design solutions for the new web, we definitely can tell that HTML5 web storage has a great future. This new technology or storage has two key features that will make you forget about cookies:
- huge amount of space: now you can store much more useful information on the user’s hard drive including some localization data, temporary storage etc.
- simple API: developers can easily set up key/value pairs on the fly.
According to the W3C specification draft, there are two types of web storage and these are local storage and session storage. HTML5 web storage reduces a huge number of server requests and now personal data will be used only when it is being asked for, instead of being requested with every request to the server as it was with the cookies. It means that you can store large amounts of data without affecting the website’s performance. HTML5 along with Javascript allow to use more of user’s resources without involving server-side programming and databases. Now let’s go deeper with these two types.
Local storage uses technogoly similar to Silverlight isolated storage when all data is stored on the client’s side. Also local storage has no time limit – basically you can access your personal data anytime you want. Local storage is positioned as a cost-effective alternative to HTTP cookies.
Session storage is used to store the data of one session and it will be deleted when the user closes the browser window. As you may have guessed, the session storage is great for storing data for the websites which are open in one browser window while local storage can span across multiple browser windows.
Web Storage is supported by such browsers as IE8, Firefox 3.5, Safari 4, Google Chrome 4, Opera 10.50 and all of their newer versions. So, if you want to start using web storage API please consider the list of browsers supported.
The usage of HTML5 Web Storage
This technology is great for web developers that create various web applications. Local storage allows you to run applications offline, use data during multiple browsers sessions, save info about the products added to the shopping cart and so on. Before you’ll start using web storage objects you must keep in the mind that web storage as well as cookies can be turned off by the user.
Another important detail which concerns the web storage is the ability to store only strings which is a huge drawback so far. Also don’t forget about the security issues that might appear while using web storage. Use only secure connections to share improtant information between client’s machine and server. 5 Most Exciting New Features of WordPress 3.3

Good news, everyone! There is no doubt that many of you, our fellow WordPress users, have heard that the major update of WordPress is coming – WordPress ver. 3.3. Yes, the current release doesn’t have such significant meaning comparing to what WordPress 3.0 was, but still it does have few very important features that cause huge impact on both simple users and WordPress developers. It means that WordPress team is planning to improve their product’s user experience for all categories of users. Now that’s that we call a smart content management system. Also, seeing our favorite CMS evolving is really a pleasant thing to do. Now if we get back to its latest release the first thing that stands out is a well-defined visual improvement of the dashboard. Also some major changes have been made in the under-the-hood sector which is primarily interesting for WordPress developers.
By the way, we’ve tested our WordPress 3.x themes with this new version of a platform and they’re perfectly compatible. Truly a match made in heaven. Now back to those new features.
We’ve collected five of most interesting (according to our opinion) new features that have been presented in WordPress 3.3 and we are going to share them with you. So, if you haven’t updated your WordPress version maybe this list will convince you to do that.
- Responsive Layout: while mobile web design sets new rules of the game, WordPress developers are trying to stay in touch with it. Version 3.3 has major support for the responsive layout (the full support will be realized in version 3.4). So far the left side menu bar will collapse on small screens. This is a first step in making your WordPress website more mobile friendly.
- Improved Media Uploader: WordPress said no to Flash uploader and now it utilizes HTML5 and Silverlight technology. Now you can easily use drag-n-drop technology to upload PDF, graphics and other files right from the desktop or any folder. This is a long-anticipated feature because Flash uploader was quite buggy and often users were switching to the older browser uploader which allowed to upload only one file at one time.
- Major Dashoboard Improvement: now you can use enhanced Help section, enjoy new tooltips, flyout menues and redesigned admin bar. All of these are visual and functional innovations that are involved to simplify admin panel and make it more user friendly. Also these improvements allow WP theme and plugins developers to create their own tours by using new tooltips.
- WordPress API Editor: starting from version 3.3 plugin develoeprs are able to customize the post editor or even add additional editors. This awesome feature opens many great opportunities for WordPress developers.
- jQuery Package: well, based on an exponentially growing popularity of jQuery tools, WordPress has decided to simplify the life of WP developers by including such default feature as a presence of full jQuery UI toolset in the installation file. Now WordPress developers are supplied with the full package of useful tools.
