Web Marketing Tips & Tricks
Web Marketing Tip #1: Use Your Keywords In Your Titles
A <TITLE> tag is essentially an HTML markup tag whose job is to do exactly that — provide a title for a page. Your Web browser will typically also use this tag to update its title bar.
Google, Yahoo!, Live and others use title tags to gather information about your Website. The words in the title tag appear in the clickable link right near your site's description snippet in the Google, Yahoo! and Live results pages (SERPs). What you put in this tag is an important step towards ranking highly.
Therefore, make sure your title is concise, to the point, and contains your main keywords that accurately describe the content of the page.
Web Marketing Tip #2: Write Content With Your Main Keywords In Mind
Using your target keyword phrases when copywriting for your Website is the first thing to do when it comes to Google, Yahoo! and MSN Live Optimization. To onsite Google, Yahoo! and MSN Live Optimization, that is.
A word of warning though: Avoid keyword stuffing, or excessive use of keywords throughout your body text. A rule of thumb would be to include your keywords once or twice per paragraph, and only if it flows and looks natural.
And don't forget, onsite SEO such as keyword optimization is not a cure-all. Not by a long shot. Onpage factors are typically not enough to get to the top in Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives, especially for competitive terms.
Web Marketing Tip #3: Internal Linking
"Internal links" (aka site-internal links) are links coming from other pages located on the same domain.
Internal links can be used to indicate a specific page's importance in an overall Website's structure. This is an SEO factor Website owners have complete control over: By creating a proper links structure and using the right anchor texts you can make Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives think a specific page is more important than other pages of your Website.
Web Marketing Tip #4: A Website's Primary Topic
A Website's primary topic or "theme" can be determined by analyzing the content of all its pages, and can have an influence on this Website's rankings in related SERPs (Search Engines Results Pages.)
For instance, if a site is dedicated to blue widgets, its pages may rank higher for blue widget searches compared to pages from general-topic Websites, such as widgets sites.
As far as link building goes, theme relevancy is very important. If you link to unrelated sites, Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives can misinterpret your Website's theme, and rank it accordingly. Also, with the new Google this could result in an eventual ban.
Web Marketing Tip #5: A Site's Link Popularity
"Global" link popularity is defined as the quantity and quality of all incoming links to your site.
This is what makes a site into an "authority Website". The more incoming backlinks from important sites you get, the more "important" your own Website becomes. And, the higher rankings you achieve.
Web Marketing Tip #6: Popularity of a Website in a Topical Community
Also known as "local" link popularity, this factor differs from the "global" popularity in that only the topical community sites are counted, rather than any pages.
Topical community is a group of related Websites devoted to the same topic or theme, all being heavily interlinked with one another. Find topical communities that are relevant to your Website's niche, and get links from them. These links are extremely valuable and carry great weight in Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives.
Web Marketing Tip #7: Using Your Keywords In Anchor Texts
Also known as "Link Text", anchor text is the visible/clickable part of a hyperlink.
Anchor text is considered to be one of the biggest factors taken into account by Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives' algorithms. The objective of Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives is to provide highly relevant search results. This is where anchor text helps as the tendency is to hyperlink words relevant to the landing Web page.
Make sure you use your keywords in the anchor text of your incoming links if you do link exchange. However, it's generally a bad idea to use the exact same anchor text because this doesn't appear natural. Vary your anchor texts every once in a while and you'll stay on the safe side at all times.
Web Marketing Tip #8: Link Context
Possibly the second most important thing about a link that Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives examine (besides the anchor text) is the text directly preceding, surrounding or following that link, i.e. link context.
You really want to make sure you have relevant text on either side of the link. Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives like related content, so if you can provide more content than just a link, you'll be well on your way to increasing the power of your links.
Web Marketing Tip #9: Keyword Spamming
Deliberate keyword stuffing in an attempt to tweak keyword density and appear "relevant" for some keywords or phrases is definitely something you should stay away from. It won't bring you any benefits whatsoever, and may get you into trouble. Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives are smart enough to check for instances of keyword spamming, and will penalize abusing Websites by decreasing their rankings or even completely removing what they consider spammy pages from the index without prior notice.
Web Marketing Tip #10: Duplicate Content
Duplicating a large portion of a Website or page's content on another site or page can be damaging to one or both parties. Most Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives apply a duplicate content filter, and when two pages appear too similar, Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives may penalize one or both of them. This rule also applies to pages within one domain.
Duplicate content is considered spammy by Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives and therefore should be avoided.
Web Marketing Tip #11: Bad HTML Code And Broken Links
If a Web page uses valid HTML code and has broken links on it could be used as a fairly good "quality indicator".
Using HTML code that may not be readable or crawlable by Google, Yahoo! and MSN Live spiders could adversely affect search rankings, and result in pages being dropped from index.
Having links to documents or URLs that return a HTTP 404 error (aka "Page Not Found" message) when followed may also have a negative effect on rankings, both for the pages containing dead links and the Website as a whole.
Web Marketing Tip #12: Website Age
Website age is another factor that can affect on how well you rank in major Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives. Older Websites are generally considered more "authoritative", "trusted" and "valuable" compared to fresh sites.
Basically, the same applies to separate Web pages. Older pages may be considered more trustworthy than newer ones, particularly if they have continued to build links over a long period of time.
So think twice before drastically changing your site's structure or renaming your pages — this can make Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives think your content is new, and, therefore, less authoritative.
Web Marketing Tip #13: Keyword Use In Domain Name
When calculating rankings, Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives will also look at your site's domain name. If it contains the keywords relevant to a search query being processed, your site may receive a minor boost and be ranked a bit higher. Relevant words and phrases in your domain name can therefore be beneficial.
Another thing to consider is that people will use your site's URL when linking to it, which also makes using keyword-rich domain names worth it — you can have more links with your target keywords in their anchor text this way.
Web Marketing Tip #14: Sitemap Page
A sitemap page provides an easy way for a Google, Yahoo! and MSN Live spider to quickly and painlessly crawl the entire site and index it. It also ensures your pages are interlinked. Feel free to use keyword-rich anchor texts in sitemap links.
And last but not least, think about your visitors. If you have tons of useful content, a good sitemap will make their lives a lot easier.
Web Marketing Tip #15: Emphasizing Your Body Text
Using different HTML tags (such as <H1>, <B>, <STRONG>, <I>, <U>, etc) to emphasize specific words or phrases in your Website copy used to be quite important some time ago.
Although this technique is still very popular, it's unclear if modern Google, Yahoo! and MSN Lives rely on it when calculating ranking, as this practice is widespread and easy to abuse. |
